Middle and High School Students Are Invited To Shape Our Future
Introduction
The Framingham Public Library’s Homework Center Program is kicking off Framingham’s 5th Annual Essay Contest!
We invite all middle and high school students who live or go to school in Framingham to submit essays. The Library’s Homework Center began the Town-wide annual essay contest five years ago with the prompt “What I love about Framingham”, encouraging students to share three things they have loved about growing up in Framingham.
The next year our prompt was “What I know about the History of Framingham” Requiring students to do some research and tell us three things they know about Framingham’s history, and why these events were important in the history of Framingham.
Year three we asked “Should Framingham Remain a Town or change to a City form of government?” Empowering students to have share their voice in how they would like to see the governance of Framingham grow.
Last year “Three Things I’d Like Our New Mayor To Do for Framingham” enabled students to “talk to the mayor” and let her know the concerns, hopes and dreams of the young people in our city.
Having made the transition from a town to a city form of government, we are now presented with what is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity!
Framingham needs to create a new seal for our city. (The last time the Seal of Framingham was changed was in the year 1900!)
We invite students to tell us in 500 words or less, three images or elements they think should appear on the Seal for City of Framingham and why they think each of these elements is important in portraying Framingham.
Essays are due Monday, November 5th at the Main Library and can be emailed to jgatlin@minlib.net.
The Essay Evaluation Committee will read the essays and choose one middle and high school essay as the winning essays for contest.
The Library will host the Authors’ Reception, Thursday, November 15th, 7:00pm at the Main Library, 49 Lexington Street.
The winners will be announced, invited to read their essay to the audience and awarded the $100.00 cash prize!
All submitted essays will be displayed in the Costin Room during the Reception so everyone can read and congratulate the students on their work. Families, friends, school and city officials and the press are invited to attend.
There will be a dessert buffet for everyone to enjoy.
