Unanimous School Committee Approval Increases Substitute Pay Rates for Selected Substitute Categories for the Remainder of the School Year

Framingham Public Schools continues with recruitment of Classroom Supervisors and Substitutes with the approved higher pay rates.

Friday, February 5, 2021 (Framingham, MA) - This past Wednesday night the Framingham School Committee voted unanimously in favor of the Framingham Public School Department’s recommendation to increase the pay rate of full-time Permanent Substitutes and Long Term Substitutes for Unit A Teachers. Presented by Lincoln Lynch IV, the Executive Director of Finance and Operations, and Tiago Gadens, Assistant Director of Human Resources, this supports an effort encouraging the District’s dedicated and valuable staff members to remain in their current positions. Additionally this rate increase improves the District’s recruitment efforts to continue hiring qualified staff members by offering more competitive pay.

There are several openings for Long Term Substitutes, Permanent Substitute Teachers, and Classroom Supervisors. Interested parties are encouraged to apply for these positions by visiting the Careers section of the Framingham Public Schools website.

Recently FPS also created new, temporary Emergency COVID Response Classroom Supervisor positions which were announced on January 13th.The Classroom Supervisors support accommodation needs by supervising classrooms where Unit A teachers are unable to return to in-person instruction due to disabilities or underlying health conditions under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). In these cases, the regular classroom teacher will deliver the lesson plan remotely to the same classroom

While the district had minimal time to recruit, to date over 70 new Classroom Supervisors have been onboarded to assist with these accommodations. The creation of Classroom Supervisors paired with the recruitment and retention of Substitute Teachers are part of the District’s efforts to support students with as few educator transitions as possible during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The new pay structure for full-time Permanent Substitutes and Long Term Substitute for Unit A Teachers presents a rate increase by 40%, This is proposed to start February 8, 2021 and end June 30, 2021. On July 1, 2021 the rates will return to current rates. The District is able to provide this pay rate increase totaling $144,508 of federal funding with coverage from the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund (ESSER Fund) which was a result of the CARES Act. The increase will have no impact on the School Department’s operating budget.
