MEDIA ADVISORY

Groundbreaking Ceremony to Launch the Construction Phase for the New Fuller Middle School

Tuesday, June 11, 2019 (Framingham, MA): Representatives from Framingham Public Schools, the City of Framingham, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and the public will gather Tuesday, June 18, at 9 a.m. for the Groundbreaking Ceremony to launch the construction phase of the new Fuller Middle School.

Exactly six months ago, the majority of Framingham’s voters who visited the polls supported a debt exclusion, allowing Framingham to utilize $39.5 million in state funding provided by the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) to build a new Fuller Middle School.

The Groundbreaking Ceremony will feature remarks from Mayor of Framingham Dr. Yvonne M. Spicer; Superintendent of the Framingham Public Schools Dr. Robert Tremblay; State Senate President Karen Spilka; State Treasurer and MSBA Board Chair, Deborah Goldberg; Executive Director of the MSBA Jack McCarthy; Current McCarthy Elementary School Student; and School Building Committee Co-Chair David Miles.

“This groundbreaking event is symbolic of our City’s commitment to educational excellence for every child in Framingham and marks the beginning of a new era in how we educate children in our community,” said Superintendent, Dr. Robert Tremblay. “Celebrating student learning with highly visible instructional spaces and framed by an instruction model where our students construct greater meaning from their learning by connecting content that has typically been taught as separate subjects is a breakthrough for Framingham. Project- and problem-based teaching and learning will prepare our students for a stronger high school and post-secondary experience than ever before. Preparing our students for the rest of their lives has never been more exciting than right now!”

“This is such an exciting moment for the Fuller community,” said Jose Duarte, Principal of Fuller Middle School. “Our students and staff will benefit from a state of the art building that truly supports 21st century learning with intentional integration of space for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM). The new Fuller Middle School will provide our students with a learning environment they deserve. Teachers will have access to facilities that will further support integrated strategies that educate students who come from all over the world, ensuring that they have the best opportunity to be successful in Framingham and beyond. We are eagerly looking forward to moving into this new beacon of light for education right here on the south side of Framingham.”

Courtesy of Framingham Education Channel TV (FEC-TV), the Groundbreaking Ceremony will be broadcasted live through the Framingham Public Schools Facebook Page, Comcast CH 8, Verizon CH 41, and RCN CH 15. The event will also be recorded for later playback on demand on the FEC-TV website.

About The Fuller Middle School Building Project
Fuller Middle School has served the community for over 60 years. The school has reached a point that it no longer meets today's building codes, has structural deficiencies, inefficient and inoperable systems, and does not adequately support our educational curriculum. The MSBA and the City of Framingham undertook a multi-year study to develop a cost-effective, sustainable, and educationally appropriate solution for the aging Fuller Middle School.

The new Fuller Middle School building will be three-story construction with a learning commons/cafeteria at the core surrounded by collaboration balconies fronting a perimeter of classrooms, an 8,300-square-foot gymnasium, 420-seat auditorium, and full-building air conditioning. Additionally, there will be space for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM) instructional areas. No swing space is required during construction which means a lack of neighborhood interference, and there will be no need to temporarily move students to an alternative location. The MSBA has agreed to provide a grant of $39.5 million towards the total project cost of $98.3 million. After the MSBA grant, the City’s share is $58.8 million. The school is scheduled to be completed for the start of school in 2021.
