Pride Flags for LGBTQ+ History Month
Have you seen the Pride Flags at all schools this month? The School Committee and the Framingham Public Schools are recognizing October 2020 as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer+ (LGBTQ+) History Month!
LGBTQ+ History Month is a month-long celebration that occurs in October to observe lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer history. It also honors the history of gay rights. LGBTQ History Month was first celebrated in the United States in 1994, centering National Coming Out Day, which occurs annually on October 11th. It was first known as Lesbian and Gay History Month, the coordinating committee added bisexual to the title and later transgender. Gay and Lesbian Pride Month is also celebrated in June.
As part of our recognition, the following actions and activities have taken place:
- The School Committee voted unanimously to accept the Recommendation from the Equity, Inclusion, and Diversity Subcommittee to Display Pride Flags at All Schools During October, and always display the Pride Flag at FHS.
- The School Committee voted unanimously to accept the Recommendation from the Equity, Inclusion, and Diversity Subcommittee to Consider Gender Neutral Restrooms at Secondary Schools.
- Student leaders from the Gender and Sexuality Alliance (GSA) at FHS attended and presented at the September 30th School Committee Meeting: Understanding the Gender and Sexuality Alliance (GSA)
- The Office of Teaching and Learning submitted this memo outlining curriculum for LGBTQ+ History Month: LGBTQ+ Curriculum Report
