Hello! My name is Michelle Flynn and I am your child’s second grade teacher. I am thrilled that your child is in my class this year.

Second grade is an exciting year. We enjoy reading fictional stories and getting to know new characters as well as reading informational texts learning about animals, the solar system, biographies and many other topics that interest us as learners.

We notice the world through writer's eyes so that we can write stories about the small moments in our lives, opinions about stories that we read and informational books about topics we have researched.

In math we learn how to add and subtract with numbers within 1,000, measure in inches, feet and yards as well as centimeters and meters, how to tell time and count money. We practice how to be strong mathematicians by explaining our thinking, noticing patterns, solving problems using many strategies and showing our thinking with models and drawings.

In social studies we study about our communities and different cultures as well as create maps of different types of landforms and bodies of water.

In science we view the world as scientists and engineers. We study about properties of materials. We investigate how wind and water can change our earth and how plants and animals depend upon each other in to create a well-balanced ecosystem. We ask questions and create models like scientists and define problems and design solutions like engineers.

I believe that keeping a strong, open line of communication between school and home is important to a child's success in school. Please feel free to reach out to me through the Remind app, email, mflynn@framingham.k12.ma.us, a note from home or phone call if you ever have any questions or concerns.

I am looking forward to a wonderful year of learning and discovery with all the wonderful second graders!
