  • Welcome to Potter Road Elementary School

    Welcome to Potter Road Elementary School where our goal is to ensure that all of our students reach their potential and develop a love of lifelong learning. Potter Road is a special community because of we constantly work with our students on Potter’s core values of being kind, working hard, and being safe. We work hard to instill these values in all of our students. Also, at Potter Road we stress the importance of educating the whole student--whether that includes student involvement in the musical or visual arts or their enjoyment of physical activity in physical education. We recognize that all students come to us with their own unique talents and strengths and we work to build on those throughout the school day.

    One unique aspect of Potter is our two way Portuguese program that is a strand of education within our school. It’s a program that brings together students with a range of fluency in Portuguese and English in a specially designed academic program. It follows the same curriculum as general education classes; the difference is the language of instruction. Students begin in kindergarten spending 80% of their day in Portuguese. By 3rd grade 50% of the instruction in language arts, math, science and social studies is in English, and 50% is in Portuguese. (Lessons taught in one language are not repeated in the other.) In Kindergarten students in the program spend 80% of their day learning in Portuguese and 20% in English. In 1st grade, students learn 70% of the day in Portuguese and 30% in English. In grade 2 the amount of time in Portuguese decreases to 60% and the amount of time in English increases to 40% All staff is trained in language immersion strategies to ensure full access to academic content program goals.

    The Two-Way Bilingual Program aims for students to:
    Become bilingual and biliterate in Portuguese and English
    Progress academically according to the same curriculum used in the standard classrooms
    Develop positive cross-cultural relationships and positive attitudes toward their own culture and that of others

    Among the benefits of the program--It develops mental flexibility and creativity, develops higher level thinking skills, and maintains their native language and culture while acquiring a second language

    Bem-vindos à Potter Road Elementary School onde nosso objetivo é garantir que todos os alunos alcancem seu potencial e desenvolvam um amor pela aprendizagem ao longo da vida. Potter Road é uma comunidade especial devido ao nosso trabalho constante com nossos alunos em relação aos valores centrais da Potter: ser gentil, trabalhar arduamente e estar em segurança. Trabalhamos muito para instilar esses valores nos nossos alunos. Além disso, na Potter Road, enfatizamos a importância de educar o aluno como um todo—mesmo que isso inclua o envolvimento estudantil na música, artes visuais ou no divertimento deles em participar de atividades físicas nas aulas de educação física. Segue os mesmos parâmetros curriculares das salas de educação geral; a diferença é a língua de instrução. Os alunos começam o Jardim da Infância com 80% do seu dia em português. Na 2a. série, a quantidade de tempo em português diminui para 60% e a quantidade de tempo em inglês aumenta para 40%. Toda é equipe é treinada em estratégias de imersão linguística para assegurar acesso total aos objetivos programáticos do conteúdo acadêmico.

    O Programa Two-Way Bilíngue tem como objetivos que o aluno:
    Torne-se bilíngue e biletrado em português e inglês
    Progrida academicamente de acordo com o mesmo currículo usado na sala de aula padrão
    Desenvolva relações interculturais positivas e tenha atitudes positivas em relação à própria cultura e à cultura dos seus semelhantes
