Hi! My name is Mrs. Ciavarra.Welcome to Room 117!

I have been teaching here at Woodrow Wilson for 6 years.I feel like I am the luckiest person in the world because I get to spend the day doing something I love…teaching your children.During the first few weeks of school, our focus is on building a community of learners.Children learn so much from each other so it is important that they feel safe taking risks in the classroom without the fear that they may fail.It is also important that each child feels valued as a learner and a person.

I love to use music and movement in the classroom, not only for enjoyment but also to help reinforce things that we are learning about. Some of the music I use is very specific to what is being taught in the classroom, like teaching the continents or the days of the week, and sometimes music is used simply to set the mood for learning. If you were to walk into Room 117 during Writing Workshop, you would see children engaged in writing their stories as the soft sound of piano music floats in the air.I even sing the lunch count in the morning to help the children settle down and create a calm environment to start our day.

In first grade, your children will continue to grow as readers and writers, building upon the solid foundation established in kindergarten. We will also to grow as mathematicians as we implement our new math program, Think Math!

First graders also learn about Pilgrims, animal habitats, solids and liquids, the life cycle of a frog and families in Japan!I am looking forward to a very exciting year, watching your children develop a life-long love of learning.
