Literacy
From kindergarten to fifth grade, all of our students spend time every day enjoying books of various genres addressing a broad range of topics. Teachers help students find books that are just right for them as well as teach students strategies to prepare them for more challenging books and different types of material.
All the students at Woodrow Wilson are also writers. We use the Lucy Calkins Writing Program (K-2: http://www.unitsofstudy.com/author_bios.asp , 3-5: http://www.unitsofstudy.com/iuos/series.asp ) In this program, students are taught how to write about meaningful experiences from their own lives. Teachers guide students in revising and editing their work, with the goal of having students publish several pieces of writing each year. Once their writing is published, students celebrate their hard work with a class author celebration.
At Woodrow Wilson, we stress the importance of reading outside of school. Accordingly, the PTO sponsors RIF (Reading is Fundamental http://www.rif.org ) three times a year. On RIF day, each student receives a free book of his/her choice to take home and keep. We are always looking for more parents to help us with the RIF program.

At Woodrow Wilson, we work hard to make sure that ALL of our students are prepared for the statewide MCAS. This hard work pays off as seen in our median student growth percentile (SGP). If you go to this link: http://profiles.doe.mass.edu/mcas/growth.aspx?linkid=47&orgcode=01000055&fycode=2009&orgtypecode=6& , you will see that Woodrow Wilson is a “high growth” school in the ELA MCAS. In fact, our SGP is 56 -- the 2nd highest SGP for the entire district.
The literacy program at Woodrow Wilson also includes other components of instruction such as word study, spelling, vocabulary development, grammar, and handwriting. Students learn in both English and Portuguese; depending on their native language and language proficiency. With the involvement of parents, teachers, and school support staff, we help each student become a lifelong reader and writer.
