Course Descriptions
English
The emphasis in English is on vocabulary, reading and written language. Written essays are assigned most weeks. Students receive individual feedback on their essays. This feedback fosters further development in writing skills, grammar, self-editing, and style. Creative writing is also explored. Remedial instruction is available to all students. This instruction is aimed at improving student performance in state mandated testing.
U.S. History
The course surveys American History. Units include examining the causes and effects of the American Revolution, Civil War, Great Depression, World War I, World War II and Vietnam Conflict on today's society.
Science
The Science curriculum will investigate a variety of subjects such as:
Earth Science - an introductory course involving simple geological concepts.
Biology - the study of life and basic ecology.
Astronomy - the study of the universe, galaxies, stars, and planets.
Chemistry - This course will study the fundamentals of chemistry including: matter, gases, periodic table, chemical bonds, solutions and balancing chemical equations
Mathematics
Basic Math - This course provides instruction, examples and practice in basic mathematics. Materials covered include: whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percents, and measurements.
Algebra - Topics include: exponents, formulas and problem solving.
Geometry - Area, perimeter, angles, planes, arcs and volume will be examined.
Remediation in all math topics is available. This instruction is aimed at improving student performance in state mandated testing.
Remedial Reading
Reading will be provided to students that have significant weaknesses in encoding, decoding and reading comprehension. Students must be motivated to improve their reading skills and are willing to participate in one-on-one remedial class instruction.
Career Dynamics and Work Study
The Work Study program provides an opportunity for students to continue their education and at the same time gain valuable work experience under school supervision.
