Winter 2011
Happy New Year to everyone!! I hope that you all had an enjoyable winter break! I am glad to have the students back to start all of our work to close out the first half of the year and begin the second.
It was wonderful to see you all at our Heritage Museum in December! Thanks to all parents for your support of your children as they worked on their projects. They all did a terrific job and were very proud of themselves!
Important Upcoming Dates:
* Monday, January 16 - Martin Luther King Jr Day - No school
Homework
Reading is an important part of each child's homework. Students in Room 37 are to read for 15 minutes or more each night at home, Monday through Thursday. They should write the date they read and the title of the book they read on their Reading Log. I ask parents to check what their child is reading and to initial the Reading Log at least once before the log is turned in on Friday. If books are needed, I am happy to loan them from the classroom library. If the Reading Log is misplaced, any piece of paper will do.
Additional homework is given on a nightly basis that is due the following day. You can help your child by making sure they have their completed homework with them when they leave for school in the morning.
Occasionally, other types of homework will be given, but no child should spend more than about 30 minutes per night on written homework. If your child is finding the homework a challenge, please have them do what they can, and jot me a note to let me know.
Developing good homework habits is very important, even for second graders. You can help by checking your child's folder each night, making sure to set aside time each night for homework, and helping him or her to have the homework turned in on time. Helping your child with homework is fine, but it is important for children to do as much of their own work as possible.
If a student forgets to bring home their homework, the following substitutions can be made, in order to earn a homework sticker:
- draw a picture of their favorite part of a book, and write three sentences to tell about it.
- choose five trick words and write them in sentences.
- write a math story problem, solve it, and show how it was solved.
- create your own grade appropriate homework!
Children should bring in the missed homework as soon as possible.
