Grade 5 - Room 32 - Mr. Weinstein

This is a copy of a letter that went home in your child's homework folder on Wednesday January 25.

Dear parents,

I am asking for your help with an ongoing issue I am having in our classroom:  proper and timely completion of homework.  It has been my policy in the past that if a student missed an assignment, they would complete a reflection and get it signed by a parent.  The reflection was created to help students think about the actions that led to the incomplete work and then the actions that they needed to put into place so that they could get back on track. The student would not miss recess and they would make up the work the next night. Unfortunately, the signed reflection has not been making an impact with many students.

Because student behavior has not been improving, in addition to the reflection I added in a missed recess so the students would finish the work properly.  Unfortunately, even this has not had a significant impact.  Therefore, effective immediately, in addition to completing a reflection to be signed and missing recess, each missed assignment will cause two minutes to be lost from Friday Game Centers.

It is my hope that you will review the importance of completing homework and bringing it back to school with your child.  Additionally, if your child does bring home a reflection because of a missed assignment, anything that you can do to help them understand why homework must be a priority would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your attention to this important part of your child's learning!

Sincerely,

Jeff Weinstein
