- Letters from Ms. Laguarda -

9/19/11
Unfortunately, we have had a rodent problem at Hemenway.  We have been working with the Buildings and Grounds Department of the town and they have also hired an outside exterminator company.  Buildings and Grounds and the outside company have been doing everything that they are able to do to get rid of this problem.  We are also trying to do what we can to help out.  This includes : asking parents to send crumb free / clean snacks, like  fruits and veggies.   We are also asking for kids to drink water in the classrooms and for all other foods and drinks to be enjoyed in the cafeteria.  We are asking PTO to help put together "classroom cleanup kits" that staff can use to clean quickly if there are crumbs, etc.  Some of the primary grades will be having snacks in the cafeteria or outside (weather permitting).

Thank you for your support and please ask me if you have any questions or concerns.

Dear Hemenway Families and Friends,

My name is Lucia Laguarda and I am happy to say that I will be your new principal! I feel like this is the right place for me to be for many reasons. I was born in Framingham and I grew up in Massachusetts. Upon graduating from the University of Massachusetts I went to California to teach with the Teach For America program. I always planned on coming back home and here I am!

I have taught almost all of the grades in the K-5 span and some combination classrooms as well. I also taught multicultural and bilingual education at the Graduate Education level. I am a native Spanish speaker; my parents are from Uruguay (4th in the World Cup!). I worked for the Teach For America program as a Support Coordinator to all of the new teachers in the Los Angeles area. I was also a bilingual resource teacher, an assistant principal and most recently an elementary school principal for the last nine years. I love being a principal and I know that I'll love being your principal.

I enjoy coming to school every day and being part of everything that is a school. I know how important it is for families to feel part of the school community; we will succeed if we work together. I have a daughter and a son. My daughter will start first grade this year. It is an exciting year for all of us.

I look forward to meeting all of you, and to working with you. I hope to set up a meet and greet before school starts so that we can get that opportunity.  I am also available to you anytime and you can just let me know by phone or email if you'd like to meet at another time. Thank you for all of your warm welcomes and encouragement so far it has been extremely positive which makes me believe that this whole year will be that way.

Sincerely,
Lucia Laguarda, Principal at Hemenway Elementary School
