New gardens at FHS !
Thanks to the vision of Brendan Ryan, Foodservice Director of Framingham Public Schools, there will soon be several new vegetable, fruit, and herb gardens at Framingham High School. These community gardens will inspire student learning, healthy eating, and town pride.
The Saxonville Gardens will include a large vegetable garden, a small herb garden, and blueberry/raspberry bushes in the courtyard behind the cafeteria at FHS. The gardens will be watered by an irrigation system, creating a sustainable growing environment that will be a permanent part of the community.
Certain flowers and plants, such as gladiola and onions, will be planted to deter pests from destroying the garden. No pesticides will be used. Like the Obama Garden in Washington, this garden will be organic- and three times the size! Our community will benefit from locally grown and seasonally fresh foods.
Students will eat vegetables, fruits, and herbs from the garden in the cafeteria, as well as sell them at farmers’ markets. Throughout the district, students will have the opportunity to be involved in the Saxonville Gardens. For example, elementary students will plant seeds, while middle and high school students will then care for the plants in the gardens at FHS.
Our Saxonville Gardens Project can receive up to a $25,000 grant through Pepsi’s Refresh Everything Project, which will help groundbreaking plans to go smoothly this summer. After May 1st, you can vote for this project at www.refresheverything.com/Framingham. Votes are essential to win. Only your support will make this happen!
