Philosophy

The Phoenix programstrives to achieve this missionthrough an active education process, which focuses on and attempts to foster the strengths of these adolescents. Phoenix provides academic, emotional and positive behavioral support in order to integrate students into general education classes and/or the experiences offered in the larger high school community.

Phoenix provides students with a structured, relationship-based approach to education that strives to emphasize and build on strengths. The program believes that adolescence is a difficult developmental stage in the best of circumstances, during which teenagers must begin to individuate from caretakers and determine their place in the larger community.  The students of our program must cope with additional problems such as traumatic histories, mental illness, substance abuse, and family estrangement.

Phoenix believes that it is essential to acknowledge that all adolescents possess healthy aspects of their personalities which, when fostered and encouraged, can promote the changes necessary for them to function in the high school setting.  Critical to this process is the program's collaboration with students' families and significant others involved in their lives.  These individuals are unique and have important contributions to make to the students educational experience.
