649 Introduction to Art .5 credit
This course provides the foundation for all future art electives. It
includes a wide variety of experiences in drawing, painting, design,
cartooning, calligraphy, and printmaking in order to give students the
broadest possible basis for personal expression. Elements and principles
of design common to all the visual arts will be stressed. Strategies to
understand and evaluate historical and contemporary art will be developed.

This course is planned to reinforce and expand the offerings listed in Art
1 as well as to help the student develop a more individualistic approach
to solving problems. Greater emphasis will be placed on design
fundamentals related to drawing, painting, design, clay sculpture, and
printmaking as a means for recording an experience, relating an idea, or
expressing a feeling. Exposure to a range of artists and styles will
provide the knowledge necessary to complete large murals that will be
completed by the group. Exposure to a range of artists and styles will
provide additional methods for critical comparison and better
comprehension of historical and contemporary art works.

These courses provides a general introduction to the elements of design as
they relate to the field of crafts. Students will learn basic skills and
techniques necessary to work creatively and spontaneously with fiber,paper
and clay. Assignments may include weaving on a variety of looms, basketry,
and simple bookbinding. Traditional crafts of various cultures will be
investigated. Crafts A is a first semester course and Crafts B is a second
semester course. Students are allowed to take either or both Crafts A and
Crafts B. Recommended: Art 1

This course builds on the experiences of Art 1 and 2. With a solid
foundation in the elements and principles of design, students will advance
their abilities in drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, ceramics, and
sculpture. The course offers opportunities for personalized expression in
both two-dimensional and three-dimensional design, including portraiture,
figure studies, landscapes, and abstraction. Assistance with collage
portfolios and preparation of AP Studio Art Portfolios will be provided.
Required: Art 2 (Full year course, open to grades 11 and 12)
645 AP Studio Art1 credit
This course is for students preparing an Advanced Placement Studio Art
Portfolio. Each portfolio consists of 24 slides of artwork, including a
"Breadth" requirement (evidence of a broad range of mastery),
and a "Concentration" requirement (an individualized, in-depth
focus). In early May, each student will submit a Drawing, 2-D Design, or
3-D Design Portfolio to the College Board for evaluation. Students who
receive a score of 3, 4, or 5 will receive college credit in art in many
participating colleges.
