Hello, I'm Mrs. Stamuli. Welcome to
|
Our school library serves about 475 children and their teachers. Our shelves contain books and magazines that support the curriculum and the interests/reading abilities of students and staff in grades K through 5, including fiction, nonfiction, biographies, and reference books. We stock books students use for book reports, Sage projects, author studies, state fair projects. Staff, including specialists, borrow materials for use with their language arts, math, science, social studies, and art units.
We believe that reading is exercise for the brain and therefore purchase "mentally nutritious" materials. Occasionally, "junk food for the brain" books are donated and sometimes they are put into circulation; other times, they are further donated to Bingo for Books. We keep up to date on "quality children's literature," which is subjective. We are readers who hope to inspire the love of reading in all our children. We frequently have conversations about the merits of certain requests. Some kids only read when they have to, so we hope to help them find books they want to read. One of the primary functions of our school library is getting books into kids' hands. For many families, schedules and transportation needs make getting to the public libraries nearly impossible. While reading almost anything is better than not reading at all, we try to balance the options. Typically, if the book came before the movie/TV version (Harry Potter, Charlotte's Web, etc.) we'll carry it. Generally, our collection does not include comic books (Calvin and Hobbes, Foxtrot, etc.) or books based on movie, TV, or toys (Barbie, Power Rangers, etc.)
