Language Arts

Students in the Framingham Public Schools participate in a balanced literacy program which consists of 8 components:

  • read aloud
  • guided reading
  • shared reading
  • modeled reading
  • shared writing
  • guided writing
  • independent reading
  • independent writing

 

Students will...

  • learn the skills necessary to participate effectively in class discussions, both as presenters and audience.
  • learn and use new vocabulary.
  • learn the skills to orally share experiences with peers in a small group or whole class setting.
  • be aware of print in the environment.
  • recognize that print has meaning and goes from left to right.
  • hear the distinct sounds that make up a word.
  • recognize, name, and print the letters of the alphabet-upper and lower cases.
  • recognize and print first and last name (upper case followed by lower case).
  • identify rhyming words and patterns and other sounds of spoken language.
  • connect sounds to letters to figure out the “code” of reading.
  • know that books have titles, authors, and illustrators.
  • recognize story elements: character, setting, events, problem, solution.
  • use the follow comprehension strategies:
    • Connecting
    • Previewing / Predicting
    • Questioning
    • Imaging
    • Summarizing
    • Inferring
  • retell stories heard or read.
  • memorize, recite, and act out nursery rhymes, poems, plays, songs, chants, and stories.
  • hear and read fiction and non-fiction text.
  • participate in the writing process, i.e. generate ideas, draw and/or write, revise, edit, and publish.
  • generate questions to explore/research a topic.
