Brief Statement of Subject Matter:
The integrated language arts program is a literature driven curriculum. Beginning with a piece of literature of various genres and themes, instruction incorporates all of the other language arts skills within its framework: reading, writing, grammar, usage, mechanics, spelling, vocabulary, critical thinking, problem solving, decision making, speaking, listening, viewing, and presenting.
Through the integrated approach to language arts, students broaden their knowledge of the world of literature in a way that is meaningful to their present and future lives creating life long learners. Emphasis is placed upon comprehension, analysis, application, and the development of the student’s ability to communicate more effectively in both oral and written expression.
Major Units of Study:
Although the major units are the same for each grade level, the program is sequentially organized. Each grade level builds and expands upon skills previously acquired.
Additional support is provided by the Literacy Specialists and the Gifted and Talented Teachers.
