Language Arts
Students in the Framingham Public Schools participate in a balanced literacy program which consists of 8 components:
- read aloud
- guided reading
- shared reading
- modeled writing
- shared writing
- guided writing
- independent reading
- independent writing
Students will ...
- learn the skills necessary to participate effectively in class discussions, both as presenters and audience.
- understand and acquire new vocabulary using the dictionary and thesaurus as tools.
- learn the skills to orally share experiences with peers in a small group or in a whole class setting.
- recognize and use end marks, capitalization, commas, and apostrophes.
- know the corresponding sounds of consonant blends, digraphs, ‘r’ controlled vowels, and diphthongs.
- apply decoding strategies to unfamiliar words.
- print legibly and learn the cursive alphabet.
- identify nouns, verbs, adjectives, and pronouns.
- enjoy a variety of literary genres.
- read and retell fiction stories to include character, setting, plot, problem, and solution.
- read, recite, interpret, and write poetry.
- use the following comprehension strategies:
- Connecting
- Imaging
- Previewing / Predicting
- Summarizing
- Questioning
- Inferring
- find evidence in text to support understandings.
- read aloud with phrasing and comprehension.
- retell stories read.
- read and understand elements of fables and plays.
- read, write, and analyze poetry.
- read nonfiction and identify author’s purpose – to inform/describe, to persuade, or to entertain.
- understand text features (heading, table of contents, key words, glossary, and index).
- participate in the writing process: generate ideas, write, revise, edit, and publish.
- use correct spelling of 100 high frequency words.
- practice strategies to increase ability to spell correctly in written work.
- generate questions, gather information from a variety of sources and share information in writing.
