Framingham literacy specialists identified a need for consistency in delivering effective core instruction, implementing Response To Intervention (RTI) for struggling readers, and using data to assess student achievement, monitor student progress, and review curriculum and instruction. The literacy specialists took the lead in keeping these needs in the forefront of discussions early in the current school year. The district was poised to take advantage of literacy planning processes to develop a literacy action plan both at the elementary and middle levels.
This plan addresses all three needs identified above. The major focus is on achieving consistency in the delivery of core instructional reading programs and strengthening content literacy in core content areas. While RTI initiatives exist in every school, the district staff will work toward consensus in their understanding of RTI and its distinctive design for Limited English Proficient students and special education students with a plan for consistent implementation for school year 2011-2012.Data are currently collected in every school, however the district will develop an assessment framework which ensures that the data collected are appropriate, timely, and used to improve instruction and student achievement.
